How do I choose the right decking for my project?

How do I choose the right decking for my project?

As with all improvements and enhancements to an outdoor space, there are considerations that need to be taken into account when deciding which product is best suited for the application.
We have given a few a few of the more common points below:

What size is the area the decking is required for?
Always measure the area you wish to install the decking to work out the potential cost. It will also help with planning the use of the area and also how much space it will remove from the surrounding exterior.

What budget is available?
Composite decking is more expensive than timber as an initial outlay – but costs less over it’s lifetime with savings on maintenance and the life span of the deck.

Is it in a particularly sunny area?
If the decking is likely to be in direct sunlight for most of the day, it’s best to steer clear of the darker colours available. These will absorb the heat and will be hot underfoot.

Is it a particularly wet area?
Decking is best installed in an area that remains dry and is not susceptible to flooding or pooling of water to ensure the foundations and subframe remain in place and in good condition.

Are there overhanging trees?
Any debris from overhanging trees can result in staining from dirt, sap, berries and bird droppings and will need more regular cleaning to ensure there is no damage to the board’s surface.

What height will the decking need to be?
If you are planning on having a raised or ground level deck area, checks need to be made to ensure that no ventilation air bricks or access points are covered. Make sure you account for the actual decking boards and the subframe/joists.
