How do I calculate how much composite decking I need?

It is very important to calculate the correct number of boards needed for an install. It’s always best to have too many than too few – due to the manufacturing process and the materials used, our composite boards have batch numbers, a bit like wallpaper. To ensure the decking matches and there are no colour changes, make sure you order enough boards to complete the install.

Where do I start?

The first thing is to measure the length and width of the area. Multiply these two measurements to give you the square metreage needed. Don’t forget to take into account any steps needed.
Once this figure is known, you can either use an online decking calculator tool (https://ddecks.co.uk/decking-calculator/ ) or you can work out what you need using the below steps.

  1. Once you have selected a board you like, multiply the length of the board by the width of the board and divide by 1 million. This will give you the m2 coverage of each board. For example, our Duro360 board is 3.6m long x 138mm wide – 3600mm x 138mm = 496,800 divided by 1 million = 0.4968m2 per board coverage).
  2. Add either 5% for a standard deck or 10% for a more complex deck to allow for diagonal or curved shapes and multiple cuts to the total m2 required for the install – this will allow for any wastage.
  3. Divide the total m2 required by the single board m2 coverage. This will give you the number of boards required (always round up to the nearest full figure). This is the minimum number of boards required – it’s always best to add a couple to this to make sure there is enough to complete the job.

What next?

Once you have worked out the number of boards required, you need to make sure you have sufficient fixings, fascias, corner trims etc.
Fixings (starter clips, T spacers and screws plus drill bit) come in quantities of 250 per box which is enough to cover 12.6m2. These must be used to ensure the Warranty is valid.
With all other accessories this will be dependant on where the install is and the required finished effect.

Conclusion

Working out the number of boards required is a good place to start when looking at installing a composite deck. If you have a budget in mind, this will help on the decision of which range is best for the install.
